I have just returned from having my pre-opp assessment, i was told that i had protein in my urine. is this common with R/A?
the nurse said she would contact me on Monday if this was a problem, i have waited so long for this opp, i hope this doesn't mean the opp will have to be canclled.

Hi Anne-Marie,
I've had this a couple of times.
What they usually do is send the specimen to the lab to see if there's any infection.
If there isn't, and if it's just a small amount of protein, your op will probably go ahead.
I hope it doesn't delay things for you.

Love, Doreen xx

Protein in the urine can be increased with RA.. I've had it a few times. The hospital will just want to check, as Dorat said, if there are any infections. High protein in urine can indicate the kidneys not filtering or a level of inflammation so they're just being cautious. I'm sure you have nothing to worry about... Mine never went beyond it just being a bit of protein.

Thats what the nurse said, that she would send to the lab and check for infection, she will phone on Monday if infection is found.

Thank you Doreen & Helly, for putting my mind at ease.

Good luck with the op, Anne-Marie.Like Doreen & Helly have said, protein in the urine seems to be a fairly common occurrence with RA, so hopefully it won`t delay things for you.

Like wise Ann Marie, as the others, it has turned up a few times for me as well.

Hope that it will not stop your operation though.

Yes I've had protein too, seems a lot of us do! I really hope it doesn't affect your op and I don't think it should.
YES I'VE CHANGED, PAIN DOES THAT TO PEOPLE.

Me too! Had protein and blood in urine for years and years. Becoming a bit more of a problem now, but in the early days, once the basic testing had been done for infections etc. I had surgery a couple of times with no problems. Was your blood pressure ok?
Lets hope you are reassured on Mon.
take care, Alison
